Phase 2 – Fruit trees, Greenhouses and Personal Projects

After completing the first phase of the coronavirus donation project at the end of May, we continue to collect donations.
A portion was given to one member’s family after her husband had an accident and injured his foot. This money helped pay for her husband to travel back and forth from the hospital for medical treatment.

Now, we are happy to have also completed the second phase, and we would like to share some photos with you!

Members had the opportunity to choose among several different forms of support.

Fruit Trees:
Eleven members chose fruit trees. Each woman chose a specific combination ofspecies based on their needs. In addition to citrus fruits like lemons and oranges, many members selected avocado trees. There were also some exotic species such as “water apples” (manzana de agua) and soursop (guanábana). With the support of a local agricultural engineer, a custom plan was developed for each member that details the recommended distance and depth of planting and the amount of lime and fertilizers required. The trees were distributed at our facility, and we wish the families good luck withthe cultivation!

Greenhouses:
Nine members chose the option to receive materials for greenhouses. Typical greenhouses in this region are made of wood or purlin with raised beds that have plastic roofs over them to protect the plants from heavy rain. These structures are great for growing fresh vegetables, and the raised beds mean less strain on your back. Members have been given a sufficient amount of plastic and organic soil; the members themselves with the help of their families will construct the greenhouses and take care of repairs.
Soon they will be growing vegetables typical of the region like lettuce, coriander, chives, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, and more! We wish them a good harvest!

Personal Projects:
Several members chose to receive support for their personal projects. Among them is Doña Hortensia, one of the founding members. She has a coffee plantation with about 1,000 newly planted coffee plants. With the support of this second phase, she was able to obtain 200 of the 500 new plants she wants to plant this year. Doña Hortensia, 69, receives help from her husband and her children in cultivating coffee, which they produce for the consumption of the whole family. She also plans to sell coffee to ASOMOBI to have a small income and provide a high quality product for the organization.
Another personal project supported by the donations is the work of Doña Gricel. She makes and sells fabrics to earn money for food for her family as well as to pay the water and electricity bills. With the money from the donation project, Doña Gricel received threads bought in the capital and mailed to her. Since then, she has already finished several new pieces.
In addition, some members were supported through payment of water and electricity bills, and one member was given chicks again, similar to the first phase.

The link to the donation page is still active; the third phase will follow soon! More updates can be found at the following website: https://www.betterplace.me/asomobi-biolley (all information can be found in German, Spanish, and English).

We appreciate your support!
